Interior trends for 2020 – Four trends to help create interiors of distinction

Light the way with Alabaster

White alabaster has been ever present in lighting design in 2019 and looks set to continue in 2020. The luminous appearance and neutral shade make white alabaster look fantastic in a number of different interior styles. Softer and lighter than natural marble, alabaster provides a comparable appearance without excess weight or cost. Because it’s a natural stone, each piece is distinctive.

Back to Black

Black décor looks to be a key design trend in 2020. Designers are using black in abundance, casting away their fears of it making rooms look smaller by incorporating large areas of black offset by neutral tones and good amounts of white to counteract the powerful use of black.

It’s not just bold use of black on walls and large furniture, whether a table, seating or something smaller like a light fitting or wall hanging, a touch of black will immediately complement the overall design of an interior, whilst in keeping with 2020 interior trends.

Black framed Crittall style windows, doors and partitions continue to be a popular solution for designers and alike. The dark steel frames provide a cool, contemporary feel that adds style. Whether in the home as stylish room partitioning, a shower screen in a hotel bathroom or stunning windows in an office, this specialist black metal framed glazing is continuing to grow in popularity across industry sectors.

Retro Revival

A trend set to continue into 2020 is all things retro, carefully interspersed with modern design and cool sophisticated fixtures and furnishings.

“This nostalgic trend celebrates and reimagines Mid-Century interiors and designs from a bygone era. We have named this Retro Fusion to highlight the diversity of the term retro – from the colour palette of the 70s, to the scalloped shapes of Art Deco through to 50’s signature furniture styles this trend covers it all. If it’s a classic from a bygone era, it’s big news in the world of interiors right now.” (Ref: Ideal Home)

Lighting will play a big part in 2020 retro design with a crossover of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s classic lighting styles set to make a big impact. The demand for luxurious, statesmanlike lighting incorporating antique brass, dark bronze and old English antique finishes look set to be an important part of the retro lighting design focus.

Industrial-style interiors

Industrial look interiors are not a new trend, it’s a design staple that has stood the test of time. 2020 looks set to pick up and run with the trend for industrial style interiors. A key component of the industrial design look is metal, particularly Nickel and Brass finishes incorporated into statement furniture and lighting that make a real statement. Bespoke metal furniture is a great way to bring a splash of the industrial feel into any room.
